Potato Chip & Dark Chocolate Chip Cookies

Have you ever made something so wrong it was right?

That’s exactly what today’s post is about.

I originally saw this recipe at Alli’n’sons last week – and I’m impressed I waited this long to try them out.  I had never heard of such a thing before and was very intrigued to try it out.

The Recipe:

Potato Chip & Dark Chocolate Chip Cookies, adapted slightly from Alli’n’Sons

1 c butter, softened

3/4 c sugar

3/4 c packed brown sugar

2 eggs

1 t vanilla extract

2 c all-purpose flour

1 t baking soda

2 c crushed potato chips

1 c dark chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a small bowl stir together flour and baking soda. Set aside.

Using an electric mixer, cream together butter and sugars until light and fluffy.  Add the eggs and vanilla extract.  Mix to combine.  Slowly add flour mixture, beating until well combined.  Stir in the potato chips and peanut butter chips.

Drop by the tablespoon, two inches apart, onto baking sheets lined with parchment paper or silicone liner.

Bake for 7-9 minutes, or until the cookies are golden brown.

Cool for 5 minutes on the baking sheets, then move to wire racks to finish cooling.

The Results:

As far as making the dough, these are pretty typical for cookie making.

I admit, though, that I did have a blast getting my frustration out on the poor potato chips while crushing them.  There’s just something so satisfying about the crispy texture and sound of crushing potato chips.  (Or maybe that’s just me.)

Anyways, I learned while baking that these little critters like to spread out.  Way out.  So be sure to give them lots of room, or your cookies will end up attached to one another like this:

These cookies also end up very thin, so don’t let that worry you.  Mine even had some see-through parts, but I think that’s part of their charm.

Now the taste – the taste was a perfect combination of sweet cookie, rich chocolate, and crunchy salty chip.  In a word, heavenly.  All the flavors are so evident, but really complement each other.

This is one recipe that will be made again.

(And probably again after that – I have no self-control.)

On a side note, I’ve been horribly remiss in thanking several of my blogging friends for awards they’ve passed on to me.  So thank you Chris at Foodthoughtsofachefwannabe, Amy at Rolling Sin – Sweets after Dark, and Choc Chip Uru at Go Bake Yourself for the Versatile Blogger Award.

I’m supposed to share 7 interesting things about myself… but I’m really not all that interesting.  As soon as I think of some really good things, I’ll post them – I promise.

Have a great day!

  1. Okay I will admit, I was looking at the name of this post thinking “Really?”. But I never considered the sweet and salty aspect of these cookies. I can totally see myself making this again. They look addictive. And Congrats on winning these awards! 🙂

  2. Salt and sweet combination. I guess this would save me a step of eating an entire bag of chips followed by a bay of cookies. It is funny how our body sometimes craves both. Very interesting….Are the chips still crunchy after baked in the cookie?

  3. I am pretty sure I once heard of chocolate coated salted potato chips and loved the idea but have been unable to find a packet to try. So you can only imagine my excitement when I saw the title of your post!!! Must try!

  4. What a fun recipe! And my kids would totally be okay with the cookies growing together – they’d use that as an excuse to eat more than one. 😉 Potato chips in chocolate chip cookies, who knew!

  5. I’ve been wanting carbs all this week! This would be dangerous in my house, salty and sweet! I’m the one who’d eat them all! This is a fun recipe to bake for when my boys have a “boys” play date! Get’s pretty crazy with a bunch of grade schoolers!

  6. That salty, crunchy, sweet and chocolate combo must be perfect for any craving what-so-ever. How can you say you are not interesting?! You crack me up all the time over here. We want the 7 interesting things….your readers demand it. 😉

  7. These sound yummy! I love salt & chocolate combined! Have you seen the chocolate covered potato chips at Trader Joes? I bought them a few weeks ago, they were good but very rich, could only eat them in small doses.

  8. Oh boy…these will be hard to stay away from. There is something so wonderful to me about salty and sweet! Chocolate too! So, I’m in trouble here and note to self to only attempt to make these for others!!

  9. Such a classic combination of salt and sweet flavors, but I could have never thought of putting chips and chocolate together in a cookie! Sounds so insane that it’s got to be great. 🙂
